Interview with Parasite City

We were dated with "The Parasites" at 9pm in the streetbar of On The Rocks. Since we are Germans we were there maybe 15 minutes before time to get some drinks and stuff and started discussing how much too late the guys will be - we were in Finland so nothing is unusual at all. Actually exactly at 9pm Sebastian came upstairs to pick us up. Wonderful.
We postponed the Whiskey for later and made clear, that there will be a special sence of humour in the upcoming questions before we started.

finnbands: Is any of you nymphomaniac?
Ilari: *points at Sebastian* He is, really he is!
Sebastian: I don't know, i don't think so. I enjoy having sex, it's fun.
Ilari: I think he is really nymphomaniac.
Sebastian: If I want to have sex every day it doesn't make me a nymphomaniac. It doesn't.
Ilari: Many times every day.
Sebastian: But still you know, that's normal...is it? I don't know. Okay, so maybe I'm closest to a nymphomaniac in our band but... it's normal you know. Young man, you feel these things. Why not?!
finnbands: It's okay.
Ilari: All the weird people think they are normal.
finnbands: Yes, of course...that's the great thing on that.
Sebastian: I'm not weird. If I can't have sex, it makes me weird. God damn it.

finnbands: Did you ever spent a saturday night like in "Rockstar"?
Sebastian: I'm not sure if it was a saturday night. I don't remember if it was a saturday night, but yeah pretty much. Except for the limo. I haven't been in a limo ever yet, but you know. Otherwise I've done everything on some night. Can't remember if it was a saturday night.
finnbands: Everything in one night?
Ilari: Sometimes.
Sebastian: *refreshing the lyrics in his mind* "I'm a rock'n'roll star on a saturday night, I'm smoking my cigar and drinking my wine, driving in the limos and have a good time, I'm choosing from the women who are standing in line | A rock'n'roll star on a Saturday night, I got money to burn, I got planes to fly..."
I haven't got planes to fly. I can't go to a plane and fly you know, I can't do that. So it's except of flying planes and driving in limos, expet that, yes everything in one night.

finnbands: What do you do on an average saturday night?
Sebastian: That depends most to personally. I tend to watch some football...and drink. Drink and watch football maybe have some starter and that kind of stuff you know and sometimes we go out.
Ilari: I'm always messing around with someone else.
Sebastian: You're messing around every single night normally.
Ilari: Yeah, I think that's my life.
Sebastian: That's normal. *laughs*
Ilari: That's normal.

finnbands: What's the difference between me, myself, my kind and I?
Sebastian: It's just basic you know, synonyms on the same word that describes - selfishness.
Ilari: It's a little schizophrenic.
Sebastian: Yeah.
Ilari: He's normal.
Sebastian: It's normal.
Ilari: Schizophrenic, nymphomaniac.
Sebastian: *laughs* Schizophrenic. That rhymes! How he says the schizophrenic, nymphomaniac. Let's do a song about that, would be fun.

finnbands: When you were sixteen, did you ever do what your parents expected you to do?
Sebastian: Yeah, I think so.
finnbands: Really?
Sebastian: Yeah, I did.
Ilari: I never did.
Sebastian: Yeah, of course you know, many times I didn't do what they expected me to do. But I did do, what they expected me to do, too!

finnbands: Have you ever done some romantic stuff like watching the stars in the night sky?
Sebastian: Yeeeah, and afterwards I did something else that, but I couldn't tell you now... *laughs* Now we start romantically, watching the night sky....yeah, I have.

finnbands: Even there's no place like home: What's your favourite place to be?
Sebastian: Besides from my home? *thinks a long time* This is a tough question, but I think then it's my parents place at christmas time. You know I see them only once a year at christmas. So that's one week maybe two weeks, if I'm lucky...you know I get to spent time with my parents up north. I see them once a year, so it's maybe the second best place to be - personally, besides from my own place where I'm living.
finnbands: And what about you, Ilari?
Ilari: I think my other home...two other homes now...Dog's Home and Amadeus in Tampere - you know the local pubs. I spent way too much time there. I fucking love it.
Sebastian: It's normal. *laughs*

finnbands: Did you believe in monsters and demons in your bedrooms / closets when you were kids?
Sebastian: Yeah, I was really scared in them. I had this nightlamp on when I wanted to sleep. I was really scared in the dark you know. I was thinking the monsters are coming closer or are under my bed you know, it was horrible! They came from under my bed and stuff like that, shit. Yeah, I was scared and sometimes don't have... You know I can't go and sleep, I was too scared. You know, when I watch a horror movie, I can't sleep.

finnbands: Vampires turn to dust in sunlight. Are you more day or night persons? *to Ilari* You are the night person...
Ilari: I'm a night person, definitely!
Sebastian: I like evenings and nights, that's it, yeah. I hate waking up in the morning early. I'm not a morning person. So basicly in the late afternoon. I'm that person. Waking up and eat and then feeling good and stuff and hanging around with friends. Watching football games all that night.
finnbands: So you're a great fan of football?
Sebastian: I'm a huuuge fan of football. I'm English, come on!

finnbands: How can one wake up every day in the middle of the night?
Sebastian: I do everything those times. I woke up five times you know the night?
finnbands: But EVERY day? DAY, day time and night time you know.
Ilari: For some people day time is the night time!
finnbands: Okay...
Sebastian: This is a trick question!

finnbands: What do you think about battle of bands stuff like ESC? Would you take part in there by any chance?
Sebastian: In Eurovision Song Contest? Yeah sure, why not?! Why not! I would say yes, I don't know how the other guys think about that. *asking Ilari* Would you go?
Ilari: I would go, if everyone else wants to go there. I don't think that's wrong. I don't think that's something rock bands shouldn't do.
Sebastian: As long as we can play our music, yeah it's cool. Of course I'm not sure if they play playback, I think they do. You know the music stuff at least, they might sing live and that kind of stuff and that's kind of shit. It depends if you play live or not. I would do it. In otherwise battle of the bands and that kind of stuff....it's all good fun. The thing is, bands who take part in these things you know, I don't continue, I dropped out of the contest, they shouldn't take it too hard. It's like every time small groups who decide to go forward. The great bands left out and good bands go forward too, but you know...they take it too hard. It's just a competition.

finnbands: Did you get the red line in the last 10 questions?
Sebastian: *is confused* What? I've passed that ... is it a trick question again? *laughs*
finnbands: There was a red line in the last questions.
Sebastian: No, I missed it! Totally missed it, sorry!
finnbands: Do you want to know?
Sebastian: Yeah.
finnbands: So, when I thought about the questions I took your CD cover and picked a part of every song.
Sebastian: Yeah?
finnbands: Sometimes more, sometimes just the word.
Sebastian: Oh yeah, like "Rockstar" and...exactly! How is it about "Battle Song"? Ah, the battle of the bands, yeah...okay.
Ilari: I didn't get that one! But the others!
Sebastian: What about "Tombstone"?
Ilari: Wake up in the middle of the night.
Sebastian: Ah, yeah...wake up in the middle of the night, oh yeah.

finnbands: All lyrics on "10 Hits to K.O." are social critical...
Sebastian: Are they?
finnbands: I think.
Sebastian: Could be. Could be...
finnbands: So is there any special meaning behind it?
Sebastian: No, you know most of the things I've written...most of the lyrics...
Angel has done one lyric, one song I mean and Rizzie has done two. So what is on the album? I try to write about my experiences and stuff. So most of them I have done basicly by experiences myself. So it can be a bit critical in that sense but then you can draw that we are a rockband and have something to say and show some issues. We are rebellious.
Ilari: They are kind of mixed up from many years. They are not done in one year or something.
Sebastian: Yeah, it's like seven years now. We are a band for seven years now.
Ilari: Some pick up the lyrics and stuff but some pick up to make one whole piece. I mean musically. So there are many different things. It's not...
Sebastian: Yeah, the songs are not tight together, you mean. But yeah, some songs are critical. It's a place where you can be critical. You can raise up some issues that people might take a look or are too afraid to speak. You know, rockbands can almost say what ever they want to say in the media or in the gigs and where ever and so on and people say 'Uh, that's cool.' You know, imagine a politician go there and say 'fuck you'. That's not cool and you sucked in media ... or a sports person. You know, these idols for young people. They can't go and swear in public. You are immediately banned by media. That isn't an easy thing. Nobody would say to a rockband you cannot do that!
finnbands: But rockbands are idols to young people as well, so where is the difference?
Sebastian: Yeah yeah, but we get away with many things what other people in public won't get away with. Like some rock singer goes and swears in public media you know and shows his middle fingers and that kind of stuff, that is cool.
Ilari: It's expective!
Sebastian: You know, that is cool, he's rock!
Ilari: You should do that.
Sebastian: And when you go to the United States everybody would be shocked. You cannot do that! ... we should be critical. We have the right to be critical. That's the thing we have to do.
Ilari: Rock is about rebellion in any way.
Sebastian: Yes, it is! ... Doing things that are not allowed and breaking the law!

finnbands: When we met the last time about two years ago you had already some songs done that are on the CD now. I am not sure which songs it were, "Secretly mine", "Tombstone" and some others. How is it for you to play these old songs over and over again?
Sebastian: Well...
Ilari: New arrangements.
Sebastian: Yeah, we arrange the songs new. That's how to bring a bit new life to it. Of course you know, it's more exiting to play new songs. You tend to get bored with the old ones. Day after day, night after night, gig after gig we are doing the same old songs for seven years. Like "Sweet Lady" is the first one that we ever wrote as a band. And in the beginning we played it like two years in a row every single night. And then we quit playing it. We didn't want to do it anymore. We had new songs and we played them. So luckily we could arrange the old songs again. That brings new life to them. So it's pretty cool to play them again. The last missing question after six month or so. But they are good songs and it's always fun to play good songs. No matter how many times you play them. On stage you know anyway it doesn't matter. When we start the gig it will be fun. But before and after you maybe feel like 'shit we have to do this song again'.
Ilari: When we are rehearsing stuff on and on again we are doing new arrangements to keep it interesting.
Sebastian: Yeah, the positive is to plan some new stuff with old songs. Like at Tampere Talo gig we had some fire jugglers to come in 'Burn'. We trained some time with them before and then they juggled fireball and this kind of shit during the show and that was really interesting again. You know, we can do this kind of stuff when it becomes too boring.
