Interview with Mind of Doll

After talking about this interview for a while, Visa - singer and songwriter of Mind of Doll - and me finally made it to the same place at the same time. Even one of us was hungover. Due to little technical problems the first two questions weren't recorded while discussion them first so the answers are now a little shorter when we repeated them.

finnbands: At first: Who of you is the hero and who is the doll?
Visa: Well, we are all heros, low life heros. The doll is more like somehting that doesn't exist. Something to play around.

finnbands: 'Low Life Heroes' was out in November 2007, but I think it's not too late yet to promote it. Would you buy it if it wouldn't be yours?
Visa: Yeah, it's a high energy rock'n'roll album and everyone should get it in the stores now. I would buy it!

finnbands: What's your personal favorite song on the CD?
Visa: For me "Marks on my Face" ment much for me and "Sick girl sad case". So maybe those two. And "Lovers". It's a personal song.

finnbands: Where do you get your inspiration for songwriting from?
Visa: From my personal crises *laughs* and stuff like this. From the streets I think, from the bars, from the people I met. Storys and stuff like that.

finnbands: How important is a CD booklet for you?
Visa: I can say really important *smiles*. I always have some paper. You never know when ....... you might sit in a bus stop and you see people go round and you see the old man there just drinking from the bag ... this stories.

finnbands: You did your current promo pictures with an old car. Has any of you a fetish for cars?
Visa: Well, I don't have a car! You know that car in the promos was ... one of the Finnish presidents used to drive that car. Mikko Pasikivi. I think the only men in our band who has a car is our bass player. *laughs*

finnbands: Do you have drivers license?
Visa: Yes. But I am trying to drink so I don't have to drive! *smiles*

finnbands: How do you listen to CDs? In heavy rotations or do you change it after one play?
Visa: Our album?
finnbands: Well, all albums.
Visa: Well, I have to admit that I haven't bought a record since last summer I think. I am trying to listen albums at my home when I am not getting sour, when I am laugh and in a tranquil mood and maybe Ramones in spring time and get your sneakers on. And I have been listening Johnny Cash and stuff like that. You know I don't like to be so angry all the time. It's just better to be funny and stuff like that.

finnbands: You said before Hanoi Rocks is one of your influences. But when I compare your CD to "Street Poetry" I don't hear similarities.
Visa: No no no! Absolutely not! But Hanoi Rocks is for me ... used to be... you know, when I was a kid... Hanoi Rocks was so huge rock'n'roll stars. All that glamour and stuff. Our music is not like Hanoi Rocks but there are some pieces that is like ... you can find in our album piece of there and piece of there. But absolutely Hanoi Rocks is one of the best rock'n'roll bands ever.

finnbands: Tonight there will be a concert at Nosturi "Rock against child pornography". Do you think a concert like this will help to make people more aware of this topic?
Visa: Well, we are not playing there.
finnbands: Yeah, I know.
Visa: But this is .... *thinks*
finnbands: Maybe you are playing there next time...
Visa: Yeah! Absolutely this is a good thing. Our music don't have kind of messages. But absolutely this is good thing to be against that kind of stuff. Sure we would go there playing but it's just we are trying to fool around and try to make people glad and happy with our music. But if they ask we would go there. Absolutely!

finnbands: From time to time we ask our readers to send in questions for interviews. Didn't do now, but the most FAQ is: When are you going to play in XXX [fill in any place or country].
You are going to tour Italy in March...
Are there some other plans as well already?
Visa: There has been some talking about Sweden. That is open yet still. I hope to come to Germany soon. That would be very nice.

finnbands: What's your favourite place to spend your holidays?
Visa: In the local bar! *laughs* I don't have any holidays!
finnbands: Never?
Visa: Never! It's holiday all the time!

finnbands: Do you have a day job?
Visa: Yeah!
finnbands: And what do you do?
Visa: I am a youth worker. I am working in a youth house. Actually I am studiing.
finnbands: Do you do it with passion or just to get some money in?
Visa: For both. It's a good job. You know, there are ... I would like to help kinds if I can with my own person and of course it's for some money. I have to pay the rent *laughs*.

finnbands: For how much money would you cut your hair?
Visa: How much do you have? *laughs*
finnbands: I don't have any money, sorry!
Visa: Last time I cut my hair when I was 15 years old. I think it's getting bold before I cut it! *smiles*

finnbands: What would you do, if you got unexpectedly 500.000 €?
Visa: I don't know! Maybe buy that car that was in the promos! And some guitars. And some albums I think. *thinks* And a trip for me and my friends maybe to Egypt.

finnbands: Which was the most "rock'n'roll thing" you ever did? On stage and off stage!
Visa: Yeah, we draw those mini bar up at the hotel room. Maybe that was one of them. And there is one thing I don't want to say *laughs*

finnbands: What do you think is the biggest prejudice about musicians? Concerned to your own experiences: are these prejudices rather true or false?
Visa: *thinks* What do you mean?
finnbands: There are always these prejudices e.g. 'musicians are always drunk' and stuff like this.
Visa: Yeah, I think it's true but it's half true. You have to imagine that people believe they drunk Jack Daniels before they go on stage and this is not true. I only drink a few beers before I go on stage and people expecting me to drink a whole bottle of whiskey. It's not true! Or should I say this? *laughs*

finnbands: Do you have some words in German for your German fans? You said you learnt German for one year in school.
Visa: No! *laughs* I can only say "Ich wohne in Vantaa, ich heiß Visa" and stuff like that. Maybe to German fans... do we have German fans? *smiles*
finnbands: Well, yes maybe!
Visa: Hm, a message! Do you know this thing in jungle they have with lians. Keep you lian as creased and swing it around - this is one hell of a ride.

finnbands: Ok, we are done with this questions but since we had a picture of you as default on our myspace we often got asked: How old are you? Only if you want to tell of course!
Visa: I am 24 *laughs* and turn to be 25 in next February.
